Laiwu ginger has been cultivated for more than 2000 years. It is famous at home and abroad for its golden color, bright oil, large block, skin, thin meat, less silk, spicy, strong taste and high nutritional content. In 1960, Laiwu ginger was listed as a national precious product at the "three spicy" production planning meeting of eight provinces and two cities.
In 1961, Laiwu was designated as ginger commodity base county in Shandong Province. In 2002, Laiwu ginger passed the national origin mark registration. In 2003, Laiwu ginger obtained the State Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (AQSIQ) registration of origin mark. In 2005, Laiwu ginger was listed as one of the top ten (agricultural) industrial clusters in Shandong Province. In 2008, Laiwu ginger obtained the geographical indication certification trademark of the State Administration for Industry and Commerce. The annual planting area of ginger in the city is about 150,000 mu, with an annual output of 350,000 tons, and the city's annual processing and storage capacity reaches 700,000 tons. At present, it has formed four series of preservation, pickling, dehydration and processing more than 100 products, ginger and ginger products sell well in the United States, Japan, France, Germany, Britain, Canada and other more than 100 countries and regions. It has been rated as the largest ginger exporter. "Laiwu ginger" has become a major characteristic agriculture and pillar industry of our city, and has become a well-known brand and city card of our city's foreign agricultural cooperation and exchange. In recent years, Laiwu Agricultural Bureau takes accelerating the implementation of the rural revitalization strategy as the general focus, promoting the structural reform of the agricultural supply side as the main line, aiming at improving the quality and efficiency, focusing on the development ideas of characteristic, green and colored agriculture, accelerating the transformation of old and new agricultural momentum, and making every effort to build a modern industrial system, production system and management system, so as to maintain steady and rapid growth of agricultural and rural economy. The quality of ginger in Laihu city has been significantly improved, the output has been greatly increased, the important diseases and pests, such as ginger blast, have been effectively controlled, the amount of fertilization and medicine has been significantly reduced, and remarkable social and economic benefits have been achieved.
